Today's Topic: Lecture by Native American Artist Duane Slick on February 9th

This notice came in from Melissa in our class:

Native American artist Duane Slick will be giving a lecture next wednesday at 5 pm in Williams Hall Room 301. I think his work would act as a nice supplement to what we've been talking about in class; his work is sort of an exploration of his own identity but often also addressing the issue of storytelling.

I found a fairly informative interview in the Canadian Journal of Native Studies that you might find interesting :

Thanks for that, Melissa.

If anyone else has related announcements or if you find any websites you think the course might be interested in, just let me know and I'll add them to our blog.

Samson Cree to get $360M in returned oil revenues

This story from CBC News connects to some of the things we were discussing over the last couple of weeks about land claims and ownership of natural resources.

CALGARY - The federal government won't oppose a court order to return $360 million in oil revenues to the Samson Cree.

Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Andy Scott said he supports the order, calling it a "positive step that the Crown and First Nation have been working towards for many years."

The Samson Cree – as part of a $1.4 billion lawsuit over oil and gas royalties – have argued that the federal government borrowed $360 million in oil revenues without their consent.
