Howdy everybody. I'm Eric. From New York. I'm taking this class mostly because I need the 100 level class and also because I don't think I've read Canadian Lit. Umm, yea, I think that's it. See y'all at class

I'm Brittany. I'm from Vermont, right on the border of New Hampshire and Canada. I'm taking this course because I needed the 100 level elective class. I also don't really know that much about Canadian Lit. so I thought it would be a great time to learn something.

Hi all -- I'm Laura, I currently live in Cornwall, VT which is about an hour south of here (near Middlebury). I'm taking this class because a) I'm married to a Canadian (he's from Toronto --GO LEAFS!), b) I'd like to learn more about his home and native land and c) I took ENGS 086 with Prof. Martin this summer, and had such a rockin' good time that I had to come back for more. Oh, and I needed the credit....

Hi everyone. I'm Tiffany. I'm from Plainfield, Vermont. Honestly, I'm taking this class because it's a 100 level course that fits into my schedule.

Hey there. I'm Alysa from Baltimore(ish), Maryland. I decided to take the class because I went to the Ondaatje lecture last semester and thought he was wonderful. I also almost went to school in Toronto, so I'm a fan of Canada in general.

Hi! I'm Catherine from Westford, Massachusetts. I'm taking this class because I needed a 100 level course. I am interested in Canadian Lit after taking a course on Canadian history a few years ago. Also my grandfather is from Newfoundland and I used to go visit the family up there every summer when I was younger.

Hey, I'm Stephanie from Lyndon, in the quaintly backwards Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Honestly, I'm taking this class because I had to change my schedule around after the psych class I wanted was cancelled, but I think it will be a nice change of pace.

Hello, I'm Jeremy from Boston, Massachusetts. I've just transfered into this school, though I've been a Vermont resident for four years. I know virtually nothing about Canadian literature, and a few tidbits about the diverse cultural heritage about the country. I used to watch "Kids in the Hall"...I thought this might be something new and interesting.

Hey I'm Joanna from Southern New Hampshire. I am really interested in exploring Canadian literature after reading a couple books by Canadian authors. Learning about another culture through literature is something I will enjoy because I really like to read and what I do know about Canadian culture has only sparked my interest to find out more.

Hi. I'm Jesse from Montgomery, VT. I decided to take this class because I've spent my whole life growing up in VT with Canada as my neighboor and realized that I know very little about the country, its culture and literature. I thought it would be fun and interesting and it fills a requirement for my English major, so it all works out perfectly. I also took English 86 with Paul Martin and really liked the way he ran his class.

Hi my name is Ashley. Part of my interest in this course stems in the fact that my family's summer house is in New Brunswick, Canada and I have always had a special place in my heart for the country (not as large as my love for Massachusetts but a place nonetheless). However, I realized that I know very little about the collective nation and it's culture, society and literature. Well I'm sure that is enough of my life story for you all. Have a good one, see you in class.

Hello, my name is Carolyn and although I grew up in Rutland, Vermont, I have lived in Essex Junction for more than 25 years. I am a non-traditional student with five adult kids and eight grandchildren. I work full time and this is the only class I am taking this semester. I need this class to meet my degree requirements, however, my family is French Canadian and I am delighted to learn more about the literature and culture of my "homeland".

Hi, my name is Stephanie Reynolds. I'm from Westford, Vermont (although my address is actually Essex Junction)and I'm taking this class because it is a 100 level class that I need to take for my major. I am interested in the course because my family heritage is mainly French Canadian, and it would be cool to learn more about Canada and Canadian Lit.

I'm Mary from Williston, Vermont. I'm taking Canadian Literature because I'm a Secondary Education Major with a concentration in English and the course fit into my schedule.

Hey, my name is Doug Pierson and i'm from Shelburne, VT. I just recently transfered to UVM from Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. I took this course because i am an English major and living so close to the boarder and because it fit my schedule.

Hey, my name is Jill Visca and I'm from Rochester, NY. I'm taking this class because I need the 100 level class. I live about an 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls, Canada so figured might as well learn some canadian lit.. that's about it.

I'm Eve from Toronto. I grew up half in the States and half in Canada, so the relationship between the two cultures has always been fascinating to me. I read lots of Canadian authors during summer vacations but I don't remember studying any specifically Canadian books in high school, which I attended there. I'm working on a degree to teach high school English, so I'm psyched to see how this "Canadian content" is handled in an American classroom. I should say that I have had a chance to live in 4 provinces and a territory and the country is very diverse. Burlington has been home to me for the past 7 years- maybe I feel so comfortable here because it is so close to the border. Looking forward to exploring this territory with you all!

Hey everyone. I am Renae from Brooklyn, New York. I took this class because i am an English major and i really don't know anything about Canada especially their literature. So bascially i am here to be informed.

Hello everyone, My name is Katrina and I am from the small town of Fairfield, Vermont about 10 miles from the Canadian border. I am a secondary education major with an English concentration. I am taking this class because I live so close to Canada, and have many friends who are dual citizens or go to college in Canada. I am looking forward to learning more about the country and culture through its literature.

Hi. My name is Paul Hovan and I live in North-Eastern Pennsylvania. I am taking this class becasue it satisfies a 100 level requirement and becasue I took Canadian with Professor David Massel, in which we read several Canadian novels. They weren't at all bad so I thought why not take Canadian Lit.
Posted by: Paul Hovan at August 30, 2005 1:11 PM
Hello friends, my name is Tom and I am a senior studying finance in the business school. I grew up in lovely Shelburne, VT and attended CVU for four fabulous years. My long time mentor, David Zenaty, suggested that I take this class because he is Canadian and he is tired of me making fun of him about it. Hopefully this class will enlighten me to the wonders of the Canadian way.

Hello, my name is Ted and I'm a junior here at UVM. I'm from Orange County, New York. My majors are European history and English. I know relatively nothing about Canadian culture or history, and feel pretty ashamed about that. My advisor recommended the course to me, so I'm looking forward to it.
Posted by: Ted Goetz at August 30, 2005 3:58 PM
My name is Adam. I am taking Canadian Lit in part to fulfill a requirement and in part because it sounded kind of interesting. Canada, while being one of America's closest neighbor, is a country I know relatively little about. Plus, the provinces have cool names such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Nunavut.
Posted by: Adam DeMartino at August 30, 2005 4:10 PM
My name is Alexa, I'm a UVM senior, and am taking this class to take with a writing course~it seems like a good idea to take a reading and writing course simultaneously. Also, I'm an English minor. I can't wait to start reading.
Posted by: Alexa Ritchie at August 30, 2005 4:15 PM
My name is Becca, and I'm a junior at UVM. I'm originally from South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and went to UConn for three semesters before transferring to UVM. I'm majoring in Political Science and Canadian Studies, which most people think is bizarre but I like it, so this class is a requirement for that.

Hi everyone, I'm Katie Carr from Chicago. I'm a junior here, majoring in Spanish, ans minoring in English. Aside from this being the only open hundred level course that fit into my schedule well, I'm taking it because I'm ashamed that I really know nothing about our neighbors.

Hi all, I'm Sam..originally from Waltham, MA, but a full-time Burlington resident now. I am taking this class becasue I was looking for a 100-level course and I took 86 with Paul and got to know a little bit about Canadian Lit (and him) and was interested in learning more.

Hi guys! I'm Coco, and my hometown is Ann Arbor, Michigan. I'm an english minor, and need this class for credit. Also -- wondering what the deal is with Canadians and Tim Hortons. My road-trip home to Michigan covers a stretch of Canadian highway that is 600 miles and then some.. but I was wondering why there are more Tim Hortons than there are streetlights on the roads. Nationalist phenomenon?

Hi, I'm Kathy Fenlon and I'm a senior from MA. I am taking this class because I need it to graduate and because I thought it would be interesting to read more books by Canadian authors.

Hi everyone! My name is Alanna. I am from
Cape Cod, MA. I'm a Public Communications Major with an English minor. I am taking this course, because I heard good things about it from my Eng 86 Professor, Professor Schnell who is also from Canada. I'm excited to learn more about Canada and hopefully read some good books as well.

Hello, my name is Benjamin Porter, i'm a sophomore from So. Burlington VT. i'm an english/political science major with aspirations of journalism. I'm taking this class for its level, to test the Paul Martin hype, and with hopes that canadian literature shows the same increased rationality that canadians in general exhibit.
Posted by: Benjamin Porter at August 30, 2005 9:23 PM
Hey its Brandon and I'm a senior from Fort Kent, ME. Not to repeat everyone else on here but I fell upon this class to fulfull an english requirement. I guess the fact my home town also directly borders Canada is reason to start taking an interest in the literary aspects of the country. Anyway, its the first week of class so I'm out.

I'm Sarah from VT. I'm a 4th year (though not a senior) at UVM studying sec. ed. I'm taking the class to get back into English but also to further my Canadian education - I lived with an Albertan and two BCers last year and I'd like to get a more academic understanding on their favorite country.

HI My name is Meghan and I'm a senior english major from Queens, New York. I took a Canadian history class my freshman year, and I figured taking a class in Canadian literature my senior year would be a good way to wrap up my UVM years.

The reading list seems fresh and contemporary, but likewise I admit I know little about Canadian lit! Looking forward to the field trip too, though of course not the sole reason for taking this course(!)

Hey hey, my name is Betsy and I'm from Clarendon, Vermont. I attended the University of Arizona for two years, but missed the winters so I headed back up north. I'm a senior Anthropology major with a minor in English. I'm taking this class because I need 100-level classes and because I've never met a Canadian I didn't like.

Hi everyone, I am Kyle Hannon from Harrington Park, New Jersey. I am in my fourth year at UVM and have a political science major and english minor. I am taking this class because I took colonial/post-colonial lit. last semester and Canada came up in the reading and I wanted to learn more about the country.
Posted by: Kyle Hannon at September 1, 2005 5:08 PM
Hi everyone. I'm Billy and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. I'm a senior here at UVM, and I am also an English major. I've taken a broad spectrum of English classes, and I am hoping to do something about my lack of knowledge about Canada.

Hello my name is John and I'm taking Canadian Lit because Paul Hovan told me to. That and I had Paul Martin last semester and he's a swell guy. Canadians are cool and if our country gets any worse I'm going there so I figured I might as well be familiar with their culture. I'm going to go drink a Molson Ice now. Later.

Introductions:
I am twenty-three, sometimes I forget and say twenty two but age is irrelavant to me (in most cases) I appreciate truth in all its forms, documentaries, foreign or other films which are striking (for whatever reason). Examples include: (most recent) MArch of the Penguins (saw it twice) Next Stop Wonderland, Dark Days (Documentary) Thin Blue Line, Eternal Sunshine, David Lynch (Eraser Head) etc...
I like paint and glue (particularly) modge podge glossy. Italian, German, and Spanish Vouge MAybe some day they will put out icelandic vouge.
Music: Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday: Strange fruit, Hope Sandoval and the Bavarian Bread Fruit. Scissorfight, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Pixies, Songs Ohio, Radio Head, Fugazi, Flaming Lips. Chris Issac, Moby, Chopin, Satie...ETC
POETRY and Fiction and the creation of it, any chance to see inside someones mind is about the most gratification one could get. I am in love with Stephen Hawkins and Muhammad Ali.
-A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.
-I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want.
Muhammad Ali
So to conclude, (as it is apparent) I am not a minimilist, nor am I rational, nor anything that is easily definable. Most of all, I am tired of hearing people use their words to judge what they have not attempted to understand, I suppose I sound preachy but oh well.
THE ART OF HUNGER
Uttering such a word is surely deadly.
And there are so many hungry,
So many pouting mouths.
And not enough satisfaction
to sustain us all.
And I have looked at her tongue; at her dog thirst
I have wanted to tell her that some day her body will tell her lips
that they have found the only water in a dry, dry land.
And she will fall down on her knees and thank the sky
For giving up the sweeter rain.
She will cut off her hands, leave them in the night so she can touch it
press it against her belly. Swallow
And say she once fell madly in love
And after, her lover will turn the chamber of her heartbeat
into a hard iron that cannot be wrought.
And she will keep returning
to the story of how everyone else understands
how it is beautiful.
she will not know if this is still her love
Their love. And then she will return
to dreaming of something else
