Canada and Canadian literature (posted 24 January 2005)
Have you ever read any Canadian literature so far? Any thoughts or questions on Canada? There are no dumb questions, so here's a great place to ask away.

I have read In the Skin of a Lion and Volkswagen Blues (you already knew that)- I liked Volkswagen Blues better for some reason. I found the topics interesting with identity and the weaving in of history in the novel.
One question - where is Wayne Gretzky from exactly again?

I also read In the Skin of a Lion and Volkswagen Blues in English 86 last semester. I enjoyed Volkswagen Blues because of the anticipating journey from start to finish.

I was just wondering if anyone knew about the books at the bookstore- when I went the first few days of classes, they only had about 3 of the 7 on the shelf for this class - I definitely got the Tin Flute and VW Blues and Skin of a Lion and the Anthology- but the others weren't there ... anyone have any idea?

I have read the books for Paul's 86 class, as well as The English Patient. I am a big fan of Margaret Atwood, and must say that the tv spot we saw of her the other day was great! I am currently working on finishing The Collected Works of Billy the Kid: Left Handed Poems.

I have a question about Canadian literature...I guess I am confused as to what we are looking for in each of the works we are exploring. Besides getting a general briefing of the events taking place at the time of the poems/novels/etc. I don't know what I'm supposed to be getting out of each of the texts. Just for example, in an intensive study of Faulkner and Hemmingway last semester we constantly studied the repetitive nature of failure; are there any themes or over reaching ideas that are prevalent in Canadian literature besides capturing what exactly "Canada" is...I am having trouble deciphering this. Maybe because we are covering such a wide range of lit. that to define one topic would be impossible, if this is the case that is fine. I just feel like I'm not getting all out of the texts that I could be.

I can honestly say that before this class, i really have not read any Canadian literature. Comming towards the end i have learned so much and read some great books. Some of my favorite authors have been Gabrielle Roy, David Adams RIchards and Richard Harrison... so thanks for exposing me!
