Follow up on library resources

It was great to have Daisy Benson from the UVM Library come to see us in class the other day. She asked me to pass this along the following info to you.

Canadian Periodicals

The Bailey/Howe Library has access to many Canadian periodicals in print and electronically. The following titles (which we looked at in class) represent only a small sample. Items marked with an * are scholarly publications:

Alberta History
BC Studies*
Books in Canada (The Canadian Review of Books)
British Journal of Canadian Studies*
Canadian Art
Canadian Dimension
Canadian Issues*
Canadian Literature*
CNQ (Canadian Notes and Queries)
Ellipse: First Place, First Nations
Martrix
Newfoundland and Labrador Studies*

Resources for Locating Periodical Articles
The Bailey/Howe Library has many resources for helping you to locate periodical articles. Among the best for this class are:

Canadian Periodical Index (CPI.Q) - (Popular and Scholarly - all Canadian Titles) - some full text

Academic Search Premier - (Popular and Scholarly) - lots of full text

LexisNexis Academic - Great for news and current events. To search a single publication (assuming you now the title : example Gazette) click on Sources (upper right) then click on Search this Publication, then enter search terms. Or from main LexisNexis search screen Step 1 select World News, Step 2 select North/South American News Sources, enter search terms.

Modern Language Association Bibliography (MLA) - (very scholarly) - no full text, check catalog for holdings, and/or
limit search to materials at Bailey/Howe Library

Biography Resource Center - try out the Biographical Facts search - enter writer for occupation, Canadian as nationality...

Literature Resource Center - (Reviews and some scholarly articles) full text.

Here are answers to some of the questions that we didn't address in class.

*Is there a particular area in the library stacks where I'll find all the books on Canada or all the works on Canadian Literature?.*
Canadian Literature is in area for call numbers starting with PS 8001 - PS 8999 (English Language) and PS 9001 - PS 9999 (French Language) on the third floor.
Canadian History call numbers starting with F 1001 - F 1145.2 on the second floor.
Browsing through the shelves can be a great way get ideas and get a sense of what information is available on a topic.

*How can I get pictures and videos for a project?*
UVM owns a large collection of videos and DVDs. These are all listed in our Library Catalog but there are also alphabetical lists of videos and DVDs at: http://library.uvm.edu/about/mediaresources/collections/

Locating images can be challenging.
Try the Google Image Search:
http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&q= or various digital collections and online archives such as
American Memory: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html
Library and Archives Canada: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/topics/index-e.html

Remember that like books and articles, pictures and videos are copyrighted. if you use them to illustrate a project you must give credit (cite the source) and sometimes depending upon the source you need permission.

*What do you do if a book you need is already checked out?*
When this happens you can recall the book from the other user. When you are in the Library Catalog viewing the information about a single item there is a button marked "HOLD/RECALL" near the top of the screen. Click on this and complete the form that follows.

Where can I find journals in the library? Where is the microfilm located? *
Print journals are on the second floor and are shelved by title. However, more and more of our journals are online. Consult the Library Catalog to see if a journal is in print or is online.
Microfilm is kept in the microfilm room on the second floor.

Remember, you can always come to the the reference desk or get in touch with me if you have questions or problems
