Class cancelled today, but here's what I'd like you to do with that time... (posted 9 November 2005)
HI everyone,
Sorry, I've been unable to shake this virus and am feeling particularly lousy today. So, in place of a class I'd like you to take some time to work on your podcasting assignment.
How do you feel about the technology so far? Was the workshop enough to get you ready to prepare your podcast? What have you learned so far about putting your voice to tape, so to speak?
Are you excited about others hearing your take on things? Nervous? What about the idea of being able to make your voice heard not only about Canada but about anything you want to talk about?

I haven't really started editing yet. I still need to record some more stuff. I've only done basic sound editing before (while doing film editing). I think my voice sounds really wierd on recording, which is why my voicemail message is about a second of me going "leaveamessage" as fast as I. But I do like the idea of being able to rant and rave about whatever I want to and subjecting other people to it.

Hey Paul
Hope you feel better. I can't say it wasn't nice not to have class today (I have a big test right after it,) but I'm osrry to hear that we only got exempt today because you're ill.
On a different note, I think the workshop was great...I'm trying to experiment with the Audacity right now, and I'm figuring it out ok. I really like the project in that we can rant and rave and then edit whatever we want out. An Example is I go on and on about canadian beer and how its connected to the culture for like 5 min; haha I may want to leave that out. Getting the raw speaking on to tap is fun and easy....and the project is much more fun than an esssay. It is, however, just about as challenging. Ok, I'm out..Hope you feel better.

Hey everyone
Thank you for the positive comemnts about the workshop. You were a good class, and I hope to get the chance to work with you in the future.
About LameLib-
Windows
- Go to the LAME download page.
http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~raa110/audacity/lame.html
- Click on any link from the list of identical "lame-3.96.1" links.
- When you have finished downloading LAME, unzip it and save the file lame_enc.dll anywhere on your computer.
- The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask you where lame_enc.dll is saved.
Mac OS 9 or X
- Go to the LAME download page.
http://spaghetticode.org/lame/
- Download the version of LameLib for your operating system.
- When you have finished downloading, use Stuffit Expander to extract the files. (This may happen automatically.)
- Save the file called "LameLib" anywhere on your computer.
- The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask you where LameLib is saved.
Hop this helps!

I think this is a really cool assignment because it is different from anything else I have ever done. I'm not sure if I need to record anything else for my essay but I have a lot to work with and the editing program looks like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to hearing other peoples' essays, too!

Hey Paul,
Hope you feel better, but thanks for cancelling class! :) Nice surprise. So anyways, I am a little shaken by this whole recording thing, because I am not used to doing a project like this. I hate hearing my voice on recording so it's a little weird to even record stuff, ie I get nervous speaking! I had all of this stuff down to say but I think I got nervous and spoke way too fast, so it only ended up being about 2 minutes long. So.. hoepfully I can add some more research in and then figure out how to edit it to sound nice... Later

I am digging this program. I was working on my podcast the other night and didn't realize I had been working for almost two hours..it definitely takes a lot of time and can be pretty tedious but it's also entertaining as well. I'm not sure how the final will come out but either way I'm learning a lot and becoming more familiar with the program everytime I use it. Technology is crazy lately. Get better Paul...drink an Odwalla C-Monster.

hey paul...feel better (but thanks for the break). using the ipods to create audio essays has been pretty fun so far. its cool to talk about experiences and my opinions on canadian stuff. i kinda wish i had recorded more stuff when i was in canada..like interviewing people or sounds of the hockey game..that would add alot to my recording. the workshop pretty much explained everything about audacity. that program has a lot of cool features. thus far ive only put my pieces of recordings together though. and i agree with mollie..its weird when your recording bc i talk really fast and i hate the sound of my voice. im excited to hear everyone else's topics.

Hey Paul! I'm sorry to hear that you are sick and I hope you are feeling better by the end of the week. The Podcast is going great, and its been fun because I never knew programs like audacity existed before. I am kind of nervous about other poeple hearing my part but I am excited for when we put them all together. I definitely have enough things to talk about as well and I felt really relaxed doing this type of audio assignment.

Hey, hope the virus kicks the bucket. What I've found is the most effective way for me to make a good recording is to write it down first, then read it into the microphone, so I don't stutter too much- though Audacity's great for that. I'm really excited about this podcast; I'm a talk radio fan and I've always wanted to make a radio show, so this (though technically assigned work) is a cool opportunity.

I love audacity, it's really what I need to get my soul roots freestyle rapping career off on the right track. As for my project, I do admit that I'm very ashamed of how I sound on the recorded memo, but I don't guess there's much I can do about that one. The workshop helped temendously and I appreciate people taking the time to teach us some things about audacity. I am excited about people hearing my speech when it is finished, especially the longboarding segment mixed with madd old school beastie boys beats!!! boo ya!

I haven't really gotten a chance to use it because my computer melted (thank you windows). Anyway, the class was good. The program is pretty user friendly and its always helpful to have someone around to go over the random intricacies that arise. Should be enjoyable to use. Is there a specific due date??

Hey Paul, sorry to hear that you're ill, and I saw you yesterday and had no idea you weren't feeling well!?! Anyway coming from someone who's been sick like 3 times already, you'll be fine. So I'm going to make another attempt at downloading audacity today.. honestly computers arent' my thing, but i'll give it another try. As for the podcasting, that's all going great but I still have more to do! see you Friday :)

I feel pretty ready to make a podcast. That said, I dont necessarily find myself enjoying the technology as much as one might think. I never really wanted an Ipod in the first place; its been more of a hassle than anything else. I like how easy it is to record and post things on the internet with the Ipods, but I don't really feel that they should be an active part of a school curriculum. There are those to whom Ipods are the only way to listen to music, and then there are those like me, who still believe in the power of the Casette tape.

Hey Paul, hope you feel better. I feel pretty confident with all the technology so far. I downloaded Audacity without a problem and have been messing around with all the different effects. I haven't encountered problems yet, which is nice considering I am technologically inept. I am really excited to hear everyones podcasts. When is everything due?? Take care.

Yeah hope you feel better Paul. I'm happy with the usage of technology we have used. I used my italk to record some songs. So I was framiliar with that portion. Audacity was daunting but with more time I will get the hang of it. I hate the sound of my voice, but am happy with the content of my podcast.

Does anyone know how you can play music in the background or for just short periods during your podcast?
