Here's some info from Daisy Benson, whose really helpful presentation the other day will help get you rolling in the library.
Thanks, Daisy!
Recommended Resources
For Finding Books - Use the Library Catalog. Use Quick Search to look for an item when you know the author or title. Use the Guided Keyword when you need to find material on a topic.
The truncation symbol is ? - so: histor? finds history and historical, and histories
For Finding Articles - Many choices under Find Articles and More.
3 good full-text and multi-subject resources are:
- CPI.Q (The Canadian Periodical Index) - do the subject search for a broad item and then review subdivisions.
- LexisNexis - when you search this select World News for Step One and North and South American Sources for Step Two then enter keywords. This will find materials in Canadian Sources.
- Academic Search Premier (mostly full-text)
Other databases you may find useful:
- America History and Life (name is a bit misleading, includes Canada)
- Geobase (for geography)
Remember that not all of the databases include the full-text of the article. If not full-text search in the Library Catalog to see if we own the journal (don't look for the article title in the catalog).
General Search Tips
Try to start broad and then get more specific as you learn more. Run multiple searches using different keywords.
