English 005: From Pucks to Parliament

Headphones :(

The technology folks here have asked me to keep the headphones for the iPods, so unfortunately I'll need to collect those as well. Please return them with your iPods on the day of the exam.

Your Canadian music top ten lists (and a bonus mark for the final exam!)

Great choices on your top ten lists! Glad to see some French selections there (Julie's right about Isabelle Boulay) and some jazz (Oscar Peterson is hard to beat). Also glad, of course, to see The Tragically Hip. If you've not listened yet to them, The Rheostatics, Sloan, Daniel Lanois, or Ron Sexsmith, yet, you should check them out before you have to give back the iPods.

Also, if you liked hearing Jane Sibbery, who is also amazing, she will be at Higher Ground next week (December 12). In fact, I'll give a 10% bonus on the final exam to anyone who goes to see her play (ticket stub and a photo of you there required to get your 10%). How's that for a bonus bonus mark?!

Student podcasts

Over the coming days, I will be posting podcasts created by the students in our TAP class.

Topics of these podcasts range from the students' experiences in Ottawa to hockey to the history of Canada's Northern territories.

This was an assignment to get the students working on projects that were not the typical 5 paragraph essays we often assign students in their first year. As you'll hear, they've done a great job of finding their own voices! I'll be posting these one by one, but please listen to them and post comments if you get a chance.

Student podcast #1: Marty Kreider

This is Marty's podcast about Canada's Northern territories. Even I learned a few things I didn't know about how Nunavut came to be.
