More resources on hockey

Here are some more resources on hockey that I'd like you all to check out before next week's presentation on hockey.

The CBC Archives is a rich source of multimedia content on hockey. Their Spirit of Hockey feature compiles a bunch of video and audio clips about hockey, including the recording of Roch Carrier's story The Hockey Sweater, which I have already placed on your iPods for you to listen to.

An area in the CBC archives that I was particularly excited to see was their section on Wayne Gretzky, who as you may know led my hometown team, the Edmonton Oilers, to four of their five Stanley Cups. One of the most important records broken by Wayne Gretzky was the great Maurice "Rocket" Richard's record of scoring 50 goals in 50 games. You'll also find a poem or two about him in Harrison's book.

One of the other great moments in Canadian hockey history was Canada's victory in the Canada-Russia Hockey Series in 1972.

One of the more colourful characters, both literally and figuratively, in hockey is Don Cherry. He's on every week's broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada and is either loved or despised (sometimes both at the same time) by Canadians. You'll find a poem about him in Richard Harrison's book, Hero of the Play, which we will be reading soon after our return from Ottawa. The CBC archives has a great selection of past clips of Cherry in action.
